Local Information

Visas

The People's Republic of China requires visitors to have a valid visa to enter the country. The process is comparable to acquiring a visa to enter the United States. This means that it is very important for you to start the process early. Note that while it is possible to get an expedited visa in 2-3 days, it becomes exponentially more expensive than if you have two weeks.

You can travel to China on a Leasure or Business visa. If you chose to get a Business visa, you need a formal invitation letter. CMCC can issue the invitation; however, you must get the information to them immediately. Fill in the requested data in the form and send it immediately. The form is here: (HTML) (PDF) (DOC).

In case you missed it, if you want a Business visa, you MUST send the form to CMCC IMMEDIATELY.

Note that you must apply for a visa "in person". Most people use visa expeditors, which charge anywhere between USD 15 - USD 150, depending on how little time you leave to get your visa. Contact your local Chinese embassy (USA, UK, Finland) for more information on the different types of visas, the visa application process, and costs. Your local travel agent should be able to help you with visa rules, using visa expeditors, etc.

Power

The venue is providing 220 VAC, 50 Hz power only. Note there are three different power outlet styles in China: the Type G three-prong plug (UK style mega blades), the Type A two-prong plug (looks like U.S. plug, but no neutral (big) tab), and the the Type I plug (the inverted-V). Check out China Electrical Outlets for more information. I've seen all three, so I travel with all three.
